Man who stabbed cop does not have to go back to jail (1Limburg.nl)

The court has sentenced the man who stabbed a police officer in the leg two years ago in Bunde to 27 months in prison, 24 of which are on probation. Nevertheless, the man does not have to go back to prison.

The three months the man was already serving on remand. He does have to comply with an alcohol ban and pay damages to two officers.

Officer injured

On the night of May 6-7, 2016, four officers visited the man in Bunde after disturbing reports were received by emergency services. They found him with a knife in the garden.

During the arrest, the man stabbed off. One officer was stabbed in the leg in the process; three other officers received minor injuries. The Bunden man himself also did not come out of the fight unscathed.

Unclear

For a long time it was unclear what exactly had happened on that particular night in Bunde. Therefore, the court decided in early January of this year that a reconstruction should take place. The Bunden man himself attended the reconstruction and the police officers involved also told their stories.

Nonviolent

The man was sentenced by the court for once attempted manslaughter and twice attempted aggravated assault and menacing. "That is normally the recipe for a lengthy prison sentence," the court president said at the hearing Tuesday, according to De Limburger(link is external). Because an evaluation by a psychologist showed that the man was not a rash savage, the court arrived at this sentence.
