Ter Peel did not know announcement of suicide

MAASTRICHT - The police have used pseudo-clients to force a breakthrough in the investigation into the murder of Ger Douven in Puth. Two officers allowed themselves to be treated at the beauty salon of one of the suspects, T.H. from Schinveld. During the treatments, H. gave more and more crucial information about the so-called trunk murder. That message never reached Ter Peel, said director W. Linkmont of the institution. The woman was detained on suspicion of involvement in the murder of 45-year-old compatriot in Nijswiller. The victim's body was found on Oct. 18. The woman had confessed to the murder just before the council chamber hearing. The reason she gave to her lawyer was that this would relieve her boyfriend, the other suspect in the case. "For her it didn't matter, because she was going to die soon anyway, she said," reports attorney S. Weening. The Chinese later retracted her confession.

Since her stay in prison, the woman had attempted suicide more than once. She tried to cut her wrists with her nails. To prevent a recurrence, prison staff cut the woman's nails. She also repeatedly slammed her head against the wall of her cell. In this way, she tried to drive the voices out of her head. According to the woman, the spirit of the murdered Cha had taken possession of her.

Ligmont says the woman was supervised by a psychiatrist and psychologist at the facility. "But there was never any indication that she needed additional psychiatric care," Lingmont says. "Especially in the first weeks she was very depressed, but in the last weeks she was actually doing better. So we gave her more space. She used that space to carry out her plan." The woman committed suicide Saturday by hanging herself with a towel.

The prison director is trying to get in touch with the woman's family through the Chinese embassy. If that succeeds, the body will be transferred. But Lingmont suspects that this will not succeed and that the Chinese will be buried or cremated this week. Any cremation will take place in Blerick, burial in the cemetery in Evertsoord.

Staff and inmates at Ter Peel jointly remembered the Chinese during a meeting. It is the first time someone has committed suicide at Ter Peel, Lingmont said.
