Mother dead toddler set free (Telegraph.co.uk)

VAALS - The mother of three-year-old Max from Vaals, who died under mysterious circumstances in the South Limburg border town in April last year, will not be prosecuted further by justice in Maastricht. Her lawyer confirms this to De Telegraaf.

The toddler was found dead by investigators in a home in Vaals on April 17. German Nicole S. was identified by investigators as a suspect in the case. She spent some time behind bars in Cologne prison, after which she was extradited to our country.

At the time, investigating authorities also set their sights on her Limburg boyfriend who may have had something to do with the little boy's death, but he committed suicide on April 24. The 30-year-old K. had fled the scene after the baby's death at his home in Vaals.
In Diepenbeek, Belgium, with the police in front and behind him, he was eventually unable to get away. Before the officers could get to the Vaals resident, the latter shot himself in the head. This left only Nicole S. as a suspect in the case.

She was initially charged with infanticide, but was later changed to aggravated assault resulting in death. The prosecution has now decided to dismiss the case against S.. The woman will not be prosecuted further because there is insufficient legal and convincing evidence.
"My client is very happy that the justice system has made this decision. This imputation weighed on her shoulders like a heavy burden," said her counsel Ivo van de Bergh.
