MAASTRICHT - The 26-year-old Mohammed G. from Maastricht, who had been detained for some time on suspicion of involvement in terrorist activities, was released on Wednesday by the chambers of the court in Maastricht. This was confirmed by his lawyer Serge Weening to De Telegraaf.
The man, with an Iraqi background, was arrested in late April at a shelter in the Limburg capital. He came into the Justice Department's sights after information came in to the AIVD. The latter had indications that G. wanted to travel to jihadist conflict zones, wanted to live in a place where IS is in power.

Documents show that Mohammed G. showed remarkable behavior according to the clues investigating authorities had. This included that he stopped talking to women, would pray seven times a day, that his attire was black and that he wore a beard. For the Maastricht court, however, this was not enough to detain him any longer.

G.'s lawyer Serge Weening called the justice department's conduct in the case "scandalous. ''If you think you can designate someone as a terror suspect based only on these clues, then I can imagine that Muslims feel stigmatized. There was and is no more evidence than this. We as a society should not want to lock someone up for that. I will certainly seek damages for him."

Mohammed G. was previously convicted in a terror case, but did not have to go to jail then because he was declared insane. Limburg terror suspect released.
