Rotterdam District Court

The district of Rotterdam District Court includes the following municipalities and is divided into the following two seats. Rotterdam is the seat of the court administration. In this area, the Rotterdam District Court handles cases at first instance, or cases that have not been before the court before.

The Rotterdam District Court consists of two main locations, Rotterdam and Dordrecht, where some 185,000 cases are handled annually. The Rotterdam District Court employs approximately 950 staff of which 200 are judges. The ambition of the Rotterdam District Court is to organize the work at both locations with an outward focus. Society and the perspective of the litigant are central to this.

With a world-class port in close proximity, the Court of Rotterdam specializes in the field of (inter)national shipping, port and commercial matters. In addition, the court has exclusive jurisdiction in the fields of telecommunications law, competition law and financial supervision. The court is also one of the four courts in the Netherlands that handles the more serious criminal cases submitted by the National Public Prosecutor's Office and the Functional Public Prosecutor's Office.

The court has jurisdiction in its district to administer justice in the first instance. This means that the court is the first authority to render a legal opinion on a case or conflict.
