The Zaanstad Judicial Complex meets all the requirements and standards of our time, for example in the context of daylighting and ventilation and also provides connection to modern ICT technology and security. The facility provides opportunities for maximum self-reliance (individual freedom of movement) of inmates, preventing hospitalization and better preparation for return to society.

This new facility houses more than 1,000 inmates, including incarcerated psychiatric patients. For them there is special care in an indoor clinic, the Penitentiary Psychiatric Center (PPC). The facility is multifunctional and flexible in purpose. Except for the PPC, the EZV and the lee ward, almost all cells are designed as multi-person cells. As of June 1, 2016, the PPC was put into operation, with the prison and the House of Detention following in early September 2016.
