The Penitentiary Institution (PI) Ter Apel consists of one location. PI Ter Apel has a capacity for 434 inmates and is a VRIS facility.
VRIS stands for aliens in criminal justice. The persons in detention in Ter Apel have committed a criminal offense. They have been convicted of this by the court and are staying in the Netherlands illegally (or have been declared undesirable after their crime). In cooperation with the Repatriation and Departure Service (DT&V), the aliens are prepared during detention for a return to their country of origin.

Never make a statement to anyone from the police before you have consulted with an attorney: neither as a suspect nor as a witness. This applies even when the police officer is not sitting in front of a computer. The police may write down anything you say, even when you are not in an official interview situation.
