MAASTRICHT - Not enough evidence has been found that Maastricht Muslim Aïcha (19) participated in jihad in Syria. Therefore, she will not be prosecuted, the public prosecutor's office announced Tuesday. The case will be dismissed.
Aïcha had converted to Islam in 2013. A few months later, early last year, she reportedly left by train for Turkey. Through that country, she went on to Syria. There she would have wanted to marry the well-known Dutch jihadist and former military officer Yilmaz. She would have lived in Raqqa, the capital of Islamic State's caliphate. In November, she returned to the Netherlands. Her mother had picked her up. Upon arrival in the Netherlands, Aïcha was detained. Justice suspected her of participating in a terrorist organization, but she was released after a week.
