Year in jail and driving disqualification demanded against road pirate
SITTARD/MAASTRICHT - The public prosecutor's office (OM) in Maastricht has demanded one year in prison and four years of disqualification from driving against German-based road pirateRolf S. He caused a collision on the Provincial Road from Sittard to Brunssum in April 2008, killing his girlfriend. The prosecution charged the man with "culpable homicide. Rolf S. was driving in the direction of Sittard in April 2008, when he said he veered onto the other side of the road at a speed of one hundred kilometers per hour and collided with an oncoming car. The driver of that oncoming car was seriously injured, while S.' co-driver (his girlfriend) died instantly. Research by the Netherlands Forensic Institute (NFI), among others, has established that Rolf S. must have driven between 110 and a maximum of 140 kilometers on the Provincial Road. According to his lawyer Serge Weening, however, this cannot be correct. He asked for acquittal. "What is important is that aquaplaning occurred at the scene of the accident. This also occurred just before the accident," said Weening
