MAASTRICHT - The man (69) from Bunde, who last weekend wounded several officers of the Limburg police with a knife, has no recollection of this outburst of violence. During interrogations he stated to the investigators that he blacked out when he attacked the police officers. So says his lawyer Sjanneke de Crom.
The man's charges include attempted manslaughter and attempted aggravated assault on the officers. More charges against him may follow. The examining magistrate in Maastricht extended his pre-trial detention by fourteen days. The sixty-year-old has since been transferred from the police station to De Geerhorst prison in Sittard.
The violent incident took place in the man's garden on the Berkenlaan in Bunde, a part of the municipality of Meerssen. The police went to the scene after a report from local residents that the aggressor was here waving a knife and was heavily under the influence of alcohol. When the four officers wanted to arrest him, he stabbed one of the policemen in the leg.
Three officers ended up suffering cuts in this stabbing. "My client cannot remember anything at all about what happened," indicates his counselor Sjanneke de Crom. "He apparently blacked out and says he regrets his act. He will now be psychiatrically and psychologically examined to see what happened to him. He will fully cooperate with that."
