Maastricht jihadist Mohammed G. detained longer (Limburger.nl)
Mohammed G., the 29-year-old jihadist from Maastricht suspected of involvement in a violent crime, remains in jail.
The council chamber extended the detention for 30 days, the Rotterdam District Court announced.
Violent crime
G., according to his lawyer Serge Weening, is suspected of involvement in a violent crime abroad involving two victims who were "not in good shape. About the identity of the victims, the country where the crime took place and the method of involvement, he does not want to say anything, neither does the justice department. There are several suspects abroad in this case, in the Netherlands G. is the only one, says Weening. Weening says G. is "in no way" involved.
Syria
G. was released last October after being sentenced on appeal to three years in prison, one of which was suspended, for attempting to participate in violent jihad in Syria. He was given an exceptionally long five-year probation with special conditions to prevent recurrence. In 2013, G. was also found guilty of preparing for murder by wanting to participate in the armed struggle in Syria. He received no sentence because he was deemed completely insane and was admitted to a psychiatric institution for a year.
In late February of this year, G. was arrested in a flat in Maastricht on suspicion of involvement in a violent crime. After several weeks, he was released. The prosecution successfully appealed against that release. A month ago, the court ruled that the grounds for pre-trial detention remain undiminished.
