De Schie, together with the Hoogvliet location, forms the Penitentiary Institution (PI) Rotterdam.
The De Schie location was realized in 1989, designed by Carel Weeber. Notable is the colorful character of the building, both on the outside and inside. De Schie is designated as “Inspired Property”. The capacity is 286 cell spaces in various regimes: Prison, Remand Center, Extra Care Facility (EZV), Problematic Detainee Management (BPG), and the Terrorist Department (TA).

The Hoogvliet location (formerly Rotterdam City Prison) together with the De Schie location forms the Penitentiary Institution Rotterdam. The Hoogvliet location was put into use in 2002 with the aim of reducing nuisance in the municipality of Rotterdam caused by addicted offenders. Currently, the location houses the prison regimes, Remand Center, Systematic Offenders Institution (ISD), and Very Limited Security Institution (ZBBI).
