The Hague District Court

The district of The Hague District Court covers the following municipalities and is divided into 3 regions. The court administration is seated in the Palace of Justice in The Hague. In this area, The Hague District Court handles cases in the first instance, meaning cases that have not been before a judge previously.

The Hague District Court (until January 1, 2013, known as ‘s-Gravenhage District Court) has jurisdiction to adjudicate in the first instance within its district. This means that the court is the first instance to give a legal judgment on a case or conflict. After that, a party to the proceedings (for example, the convicted person or the Public Prosecution Service (om.nl)) can appeal to the Court of Appeal in The Hague. The district court, along with the Court of Appeal in The Hague and the Trade and Industry Appeals Tribunal, is located in the Palace of Justice in The Hague. Approximately 200 judges and 720 other employees work there in permanent positions.
