Rotterdam Court

The district of Rotterdam Court includes the following municipalities and is divided into the following two court locations. The court administration is seated in Rotterdam. In this area, the Rotterdam Court handles cases in the first instance, meaning cases that have not yet been before a judge.

The Rotterdam Court consists of two main locations, Rotterdam and Dordrecht, where about 185,000 cases are handled annually. The Rotterdam Court employs approximately 950 staff members, of which 200 are judges. The ambition of the Rotterdam Court is to organize work at both locations with an outward-looking perspective. Society and the perspective of the litigant are central to this approach.

With a world-class port nearby, the Rotterdam Court specializes in (inter)national shipping, port, and trade cases. Additionally, the court has exclusive jurisdiction in the areas of telecommunications law, competition law, and financial supervision. The court also handles, as one of four courts in the Netherlands, the more serious criminal cases provided by the National Public Prosecutor’s Office and Functional Public Prosecutor’s Office.

The court has jurisdiction to adjudicate in the first instance within its district. This means that the court is the first instance to give a legal judgment on a case or conflict.

Our advice / tip
Never make a statement to anyone from the police before consulting with a lawyer: not as a suspect and not as a witness either. This also applies when the police officer is not sitting at a computer. The police may write down everything you say, even when you’re not in an official interrogation situation.
