The Penitentiary Institution (PI) Ter Apel consists of one location. PI Ter Apel has a capacity for 434 detainees and is a VRIS facility.
VRIS stands for foreigners in criminal law. The individuals detained in Ter Apel have committed a criminal offense. They have been convicted by a judge and are staying illegally in the Netherlands (or have been declared undesirable after their crime). In cooperation with the Repatriation and Departure Service (DT), the foreigners are prepared for return to their country of origin during detention.
Our advice / tip
Never make a statement to anyone from the police before consulting with a lawyer: not as a suspect and not as a witness either. This also applies when the police officer is not sitting at a computer. The police may write down everything you say, even when you’re not in an official interrogation situation.
