The Judicial Complex Zaanstad meets all modern requirements and standards, for example in terms of daylight entry and ventilation, and also provides connection to modern ICT technology and security. The facility offers opportunities for maximum self-reliance (individual freedom of movement) of detainees, to prevent institutionalization and better prepare for return to society.
This new facility accommodates more than 1,000 detainees, including detained psychiatric patients. Special care is provided for them in an in-house clinic, the Penitentiary Psychiatric Center (PPC). The facility is multifunctional and flexible in purpose. Apart from the PPC, the EZV (Extra Care Facility) and the low-stimulus unit, almost all cells are designed as multi-person cells. The PPC was put into use on June 1, 2016, and the prison and remand center will follow in early September 2016.
