The 30-year-old Maastricht jihadist Mohamed G. is no longer suspected of involvement in a fatal abduction in South Africa. G. does remain suspected of membership in the terrorist organization that allegedly carried out these predatory killings, the public prosecutor's office announced.

G. - previously convicted of trying to participate in the armed struggle in Syria - tried to steal money from the credit card of a murdered British couple.

British couple Rodney and Rachel Saunders lived in South Africa and were abducted last February and their remains were recovered two weeks later. The suspects were allegedly after their money, which they used to pay for terrorist activities. The investigation into the murders is ongoing there.

G.'s request to be allowed out of jail was denied Wednesday by the court in Rotterdam during a preliminary hearing. G. has been in pre-trial detention for a year. "I just have to rot in prison, I have no perspective. There is a lot of nonsense about me in the file," G. told the judge.

The substantive hearing of the case is likely to be in September or October. When the next preliminary hearing will take place is not yet known.
