DEN BOSCH In the case of the Limburg acid murders, in which Alan Gergeri (pictured left) was killed in 2009 and Mouhammed al Jader in 2011 and dissolved in acid, Els L., previously sentenced to 15 years in prison, remains at large until the court rules on the appeal. Al Jader and Gergeri were murdered in a house in Tüddern, Germany, just across the border from Sittard.
Before the court of appeal in Den Bosch on Oct. 12, the appeal in this high-profile case began. Several members of the L. family from Sittard were previously sentenced to lengthy prison terms by the Maastricht court. Father Hub L. and daughter Rachelle went free at the time.
Father and daughter L. appeared in court, as did mother Els. She was sentenced by the court to fifteen years in prison. Hear pretrial detention was suspended some time ago and will remain so until the court rules on the appeal in this case at the end of this year.
The previously also-convicted sons Maurice and Michel L. were heard in court on Oct. 12, but they invoked their right to privilege.
Crucial in this matter include the statements of Ron van Kempen, the now deceased family friend of the L family.
He was also previously convicted in this case for his involvement, but subsequently died. Legal psychologist Peter van Koppen took a close look at these statements by Van Kempen. His report was discussed with him by the court during the "restart" of this trial in Den Bosch.
On Dec. 14, the lawyers in the case, including Francoise Landerloo who is assisting Hub L., will begin pleading in the case. The court will only rule after that.
